s in my life, the ones involving family, friendships, and learning have always been foremost. I was born in the south of India and traveled extensively as a child. I started earning an income at 13 years old and never stopped, mostly because I got used to the joy that comes from gift-giving. My father worked as a merchant marine so travel has been an inevitability in my life. The mobility of the family has a whole different meaning to me. It required doing everything fast - making a home, making friends, getting to know your way around. It is not surprising at all that I became skilled at managing fast-track projects later in my life. Risking the exhaustion of my readers, here we go: I have labored through a variety of thankless jobs and many that have been entirely worthwhile: I have choreographed dance. I have worked in the hospitality industry with well-known brands such as Sheraton, Radisson, and Specialty Restaurants. I have sold office furniture, wheeling a red chair around the streets of downtown Los Angeles. I have worked at a German bakery and deli, arising at the crack of dawn and rarely remembered my first 2 hours of work. I have worked at an advertising agency. Hospitality helped me pay my own way for an undergraduate business education at USC (Fight on!). I graduated Summa Cum Laude and entered technology. I worked full-time through studying towards a full-time MBA at UC Berkeley and probably the greatest conundrum in my life is how to simultaneously be a Trojan and a Bear. I left the corporate world to pursue academia and entered the Ph.D. program at USC but returned to the world of technology not long after. Years later, after my first child was born and I had been through a seemingly inordinate number of corporate mergers, I entered full-time residency for a Ph.D. in Business Strategy at the Sir John Cass School of Business (City University, London), which is considered one of Europe’s Top Five business schools for MBA education, as rated by the Financial Times. Just in case you are interested, my research uses the context of the video games industry to look at innovation, interfirm collaboration and knowledge. In 2006, I officially became Dr Richardson although I cannot imagine forcing anyone to use the title to refer to me, outside of an academic conference. Speaking of which, two of my papers in business strategy and innovation were accepted for presentation at the prestigious Academy of Management conference (Atlanta, 2006). Writing and teaching are an integral part of who I am. I rarely turn down an opportunity to teach. My own learning is tremendous every single time I do. I am the inventor of a medical device (patent pending) and since I have technically performed stand-up comedy off-Broadway, I guess I can claim to be a stand-up comic of at least national standing. I returned from England when my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. To finish my Ph.D. I made several trips back to England, and on one of these trips, following the death of my mother, while I was processing the far-reaching and agonizing impact that event had on me and so many other people, Grandma Leeth’s was born. The more I allowed myself to dream and talk to parents all around me, the clearer the need became. It’s a bit frightening leveraging your children’s education fund to build a dream, but I am entirely dedicated to Grandma Leeth’s ®. It was a place I could see so clearly in my mind and I have still been surprised and delighted by the way it came to life. The people I trusted along the way seemed to improve upon my every idea. We are dependent on word-of-mouth not just out of necessity, given the paltry size of our advertising budget, but because to work, it must be a place of the community, for the community. It has been most validating for me to hear from our guests that their sister, friend, aunt, or mother always wanted to build a place like ours. Our focus is not a response to competition, but a response to our customers. I have always said we need more places for parents and their young children. If a city can sustain thousands of restaurants catering to adults, surely it can accommodate a handful catering to family dining? It delights me to no end when parents come in and thank us for enabling them to have their first adult conversation with one another since they had children. It is equally heart-warming to experience the joy of diners whose needs have been overlooked by our traditional dining out experience, as they read our menu and sample our fare. I am not at all surprised we are becoming a haven for diners who had all but given up on eating out. With us you will find real choices if you are a vegan, a child, a lover of spices, or a diner on a restricted diet. Your diet, whether a part of your life by necessity or choice, inspires innovation with us. To cater to it is a central part of what we do, and what I like to call, culinary bespoke. Quite simply it just means that a growing number of diners need commercial dining to be raised to the standards of the home kitchen. All told, life is wonderful. I am a mother of two amazing children who define my future in ways I cannot fully describe and I married a friend. I have a family of people with many irritating traits, but they are people whom I am proud to know and would seek out for friendships had I not had the privilege of knowing them as intimately as family. I have friends who are some of the most greatest human beings on earth and there seems to be abundant opportunities to meet still more. I also now live and work in Portland, Oregon. Clent Richardson: Co-Founder Raising a child, children, raising a family…..lets face it, no one is ever fully ready, or prepared for all that it entails. It has generated the full affect of human emotions in me, and is without doubt the most rewarding, taxing and fulfilling experience of my life. And candidly, while I was a bit older (read: more mature) than most, when I was blessed with our first, and then second….I was not prepared for what it took. It takes: love, courage, humility, humor, patience, laughter, forgiveness, optimism, lots of mistakes, determination, tears, will, grace, passion, pain and utter joy, to name just a few. And, family, friends, neighbors, communities, babysitters, caregivers, and places you can trust. Places where you can trust the food, the safety, security, and employees. Now there is just such a place…..a place where you can have shared values…..at long last, that place is Grandma Leeth’sTM. At Grandma Leeth’sTM you can exhale, knowing your child and family can be themselves: stimulated, fulfilled creatively, taught basic social skills and well fed with wholesome, nutritious, fun-and-yummy-to-eat food. And, you won’t have to compromise your experience for your child’s. Grandma Leeth’sTM is a place where you can have scrumptious comfort food from around the world, just the way you want it, by yourself, with your partner, friend or family.
